Brannock Foot Measuring Device
A properly fitted shoe is essential for both foot health and comfort, but it is difficult finding a fit which is both snug and sufficiently roomy. For use in both a personal and commercial setting, the Brannock Foot Measuring Device provides an expert guide to your ideal shoe size and prevents issues such as pain, injury and poor posture.
What Is the Brannock Device?
Designed in 1927, the Brannock Device is the standard measuring tool in the footwear industry. The simple yet effective design precisely measures the exact dimensions and corresponding shoe size of your feet. Two levers can be easily adjusted to indicate the heel-to-toe measurements, arch measurements and width measurements.
Why Not Just Use a Tape Measure?
Shoe sizes and foot sizes are not the same. The foot needs adequate room within the footwear to remain comfortable and allow you to perform at your best. The Brannock Measuring Device is designed to indicate the correct shoe size, not just foot size, allowing you to function in comfort.
Who Can Use the Brannock Device?
The Brannock device is primarily used in the footwear industry to provide accurate readings for customers. However, the device is also popular for home use:
- Athletes: During exercise your feet are at particular risk from injury, and a properly fitting shoe is therefore essential
- Children: While feet are growing it is critical to frequently measure the feet to ensure the correct size
- Foot Conditions: Those with prior foot conditions such as hammer toe will benefit from properly fitted shoes
- Sutiable for Men and Women: The Brannock device is designed for universal use by both men and women
How Do I Use the Brannock Measuring Device?
By providing a starting point for fitting, the device eliminates guesswork from the footwear-fitting process. Simply place your left or right foot in the heel area of the device. One lever can be adjusted to establish the width of the foot while the other measures the distance between heel and metatarsal, indicating the length of the arch of the foot.
Models of the Brannock Device
There are three versions of the Brannock Foot Measuring Device available to purchase, depending on the footwear fitting environment you're operating within; if, for example, you work with adults from the UK, the Adults UK Sizes version will be most suited to your needs. Please see below for the different models available and choose the correct version from the drop-down menu at the top of the page.
- Kids' European Sizes – Measures children's European sizes 9 - 40
- Adults' European Sizes – Measures in European sizes 34 - 51
- Adults' UK Sizes – Measures in UK Sizes 1 - 14
All adult models provide the same three functional measurements: heel-to-toe, arch and width. These three measurements are critical for properly fitted footwear.
Why Are Well Fitting Shoes So Important?
Not many people realise the impact of the feet on overall gait, posture and bodily mechanics. Poorly fitting shoes can have wide-reaching implications for your overall health and comfort. Feet are also a particularly complex part of the body, with 33 joints, 26 bones and over 100 ligaments, meaning that without proper care there is a significant chance of serious injury.
Are My Shoes the Wrong Size?
Several factors may indicate that you are wearing incorrectly fitted shoes:
- Pain or discomfort
- Calluses
- Blisters
- Poor posture
- Loss of mobility
